Patients often arrive at my clinic having already googled themselves into confusion. "Doctor, the clinic near my house says GFC is the advanced version of PRP. Another one says PRP is the gold standard. Who's lying?"
Nobody's lying, exactly. But both are selling. Let me give you the version I'd give my own brother.
What they actually are
Both treatments start the same way: we draw a small amount of your blood and concentrate the growth factors in it, then inject them into the thinning areas of your scalp to wake up weakened follicles.
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is the original method. Your blood is spun in a centrifuge and the platelet-rich layer is injected — platelets and all.
GFC (growth factor concentrate) is a newer refinement. The platelets are deliberately activated inside a special tube, made to release their growth factors, and only that concentrated, cell-free liquid is injected.
Same raw material — your blood. Different processing.
Where GFC genuinely wins
Consistency. PRP quality varies with the operator, the kit and even your hydration that day. GFC's preparation is more standardized, so each session delivers a more predictable dose.
Comfort. GFC is usually less painful and causes less post-injection soreness, because the inflammatory cells are removed. Patients who've had both almost always tell me GFC sessions were easier.
Fewer sessions in some protocols. Because the growth-factor dose per session is higher.
Where PRP holds its ground
Track record. PRP has been studied for far longer. The evidence base is simply bigger.
Cost. PRP is usually cheaper per session in Dubai. If budget decides how many sessions you can complete, finishing a full PRP course beats abandoning a GFC course halfway. An incomplete course of the "better" treatment loses to a completed course of the "good" one — every time.
The part both marketing teams skip
Neither PRP nor GFC works well if the reason for your hair loss hasn't been addressed. Low ferritin, thyroid issues, vitamin D deficiency, uncontrolled stress-shedding — inject all the growth factors you like, results will disappoint. This is exactly why I do a trichological assessment, and blood work when indicated, before recommending either. It's also why some people say "PRP didn't work for me" — often nothing was ever going to work until the underlying cause was treated.
And neither treatment revives a completely bald, shiny area. Weak follicles can be strengthened; dead ones cannot. Anyone promising otherwise is selling you hope by the millilitre.
So which one do I recommend?
It depends — genuinely. Early pattern thinning with a decent budget and low pain tolerance? GFC is a lovely option. Diffuse thinning on a tighter budget? A properly done PRP course is excellent. Deficiency-driven shedding? Fix the deficiency first; you may need neither.
That's the honest answer. It's less catchy than "the advanced new treatment," but it's the one that gets results.
FAQ
Is GFC better than PRP? GFC is more standardized and more comfortable; PRP has the longer track record and lower cost. "Better" depends on your case, budget and pain tolerance.
How many sessions do I need? Typically 3–6 sessions, four weeks apart, for either — then we judge response. See my full article on session numbers.
Is there downtime? A day of mild scalp soreness at most for either. GFC is usually gentler.
Can I switch between them? Yes, they're based on the same biology. I sometimes adjust mid-course based on response and comfort.
