Short answer, before anything else: most people need three to six sessions, spaced about four weeks apart, before we can fairly judge whether PRP is working — and visible density improvement is usually a three-to-six-month story, not a three-week one.

Now the longer answer, because the short one hides everything that matters.

Why nobody can honestly promise you a number upfront

Your response to PRP depends on things that differ from person to person: the cause and stage of your hair loss, how many "sleeping but alive" follicles you still have, your general health, and whether underlying issues like iron or vitamin D deficiency have been corrected. Two friends can do the same protocol at the same clinic and get different results, and both outcomes are "normal."

So when a clinic promises "guaranteed results in X sessions" before even examining your scalp — that's a sales script, not medicine.

The realistic month-by-month timeline

Here's what I tell my patients to expect from a properly indicated PRP course:

Weeks 0–6: Not much visible. Some people notice slightly reduced shedding. Don't panic and don't celebrate — it's too early for either.

Weeks 6–10 (usually after session 2–3): Shedding noticeably slows for most responders. Hair feels a bit "sturdier." This is the first honest checkpoint.

Months 3–4: Baby hairs along the hairline and part, better volume when styling. Photos taken under the same light start to show it — which is why I photograph every patient at every visit. Memory is a terrible measuring tool.

Months 4–6: This is when we make the real call. Good response? We finish the course and plan maintenance. Weak response? We re-examine the diagnosis and change strategy. Continuing to sell sessions to a non-responder is, in my view, unethical.

The maintenance question everyone forgets to ask

PRP is not a permanent, one-time fix — especially for pattern hair loss, which is a lifelong tendency. After the initial course, most responders need a maintenance session every four to six months to hold their gains. Budget for this from the start. I'd rather you know on day one than feel misled in month eight.

What can shorten or lengthen your course

  • Fixing deficiencies first shortens it. This is why I test before I treat.

  • Combining with medical therapy (where suitable) usually improves results — PRP works better as part of a plan than as a solo hero.

  • Advanced thinning lengthens it, and beyond a certain point honesty demands I tell you PRP isn't your answer at all.

A note on "PRP packages"

Prepaid six-session packages create a quiet pressure to keep injecting whether or not you're responding. I prefer reviewing at each visit. Your scalp doesn't care what package was purchased.

FAQ

  • How many PRP sessions until I see results? Most responders notice reduced shedding after 2–3 sessions; visible density takes 3–6 months.

  • Do PRP results last forever? No. For pattern hair loss, maintenance every 4–6 months is typically needed to keep results.

  • What if nothing improves after 3–4 sessions? We stop and re-investigate the diagnosis rather than selling more of the same.

  • Can PRP work without any other treatment? Sometimes, but it generally performs best combined with medical therapy and correction of deficiencies.
